What is Narrative Therapy?

Narrative therapy was developed in the 1980’s by Michael White and David Epston. This collaborative model seeks to be a respectful, non-blaming approach to counseling in which people are viewed as the experts in their own lives. This style of therapy suggests that identities are shaped by the accounts within a person’s life story. The problems that come up in life, and which bring people in for therapy, are viewed as separate from the person. This approach to therapy presumes people have many skills, competencies, beliefs, values, commitments and abilities that will assist them to reduce the influence of the problems in their lives. Once these attributes have
been discovered, new, preferred stories may be created which reduce the influence of problems for a more positive future..
